Why Measure pH?

The pH of your urine is an important indicator of your overall health. Several factors can influence pH levels and contribute to the accumulation of acidic waste in the body, including:

  • Acid-forming foods (such as alcohol, meat, and sugar)
  • Stress
  • Medication use
  • Intense physical activity
  • Air pollution

Excess acidic waste can be likened to unwanted software on a computer: it occupies valuable space, infects the system, and causes it to run less efficiently. While the body has mechanisms to neutralize and eliminate these acidic wastes, they are often not enough.

The importance of measuring pH

Maintaining the acid-base balance is crucial for the body to function smoothly. Measuring pH, such as with Alka® pH Test Strips, offers an easy and convenient way to assess the acidity of your urine.

This measurement can also guide potential lifestyle adjustments.

Important: urine pH fluctuates

It’s essential to note that urine pH levels fluctuate throughout the day, typically ranging from 5.0 to 7.5. These fluctuations are influenced, in part, by the meals we consume.
Morning urine tends to be more acidic because the body excretes more acidic waste during the night. After a meal, a healthy individual usually produces a surge of alkaline substances to aid digestion. Therefore, a single measurement may not provide a complete picture.

How to get the best measurement result

To obtain the most accurate measurement, dip a pH strip in your urine, compare the resulting color to the color chart, and determine the pH value. It is recommended to measure your urine pH at three different times: immediately upon waking, around 1:00 PM, and at 8:00 PM.

To calculate the average pH, add all the measurements together and divide by the total number of measurements taken.

How to use Alka® pH-Teststrips

Recommended measurement procedure

  1. 1 After 8:00 PM the evening before the test day, do not eat anything (water is allowed).
  2. 2 Begin the test day by measuring your morning urine.
  3. 3 Take the second measurement around 1:00 PM with a new strip.
  4. 4 Finish the test day with a final measurement around 8:00 PM.

Interpreting Results

Average pH 6.5–7.0 → No significant acidification
Average pH 5.5–6.5 → Moderate acidification
Average pH 4.5–5.5 → High level of acidification

Important to know

Morning urine is often more acidic due to the nighttime excretion of acidic waste products.

Content

  • 100 test strips
  • 1 package for over 1 year of use with biweekly measurements
  • Medical-grade pH test strips
  • Measurement range: pH 4.5–10
  • Includes a convenient pH color chart

The urine pH is lower because many acids are being excreted through urine. Ideally, urine would only have a pH of 7 or higher, but this rarely occurs.

The three colors on the test strip measure OH⁻ ions, i.e., the urine’s pH. The pH test strips measure with an accuracy of 0.5 pH units. The colors that match most closely indicate the pH value. Sometimes, for example, two colors may indicate a pH of 6, while one color leans more toward a pH of 5.5, resulting in a pH value of 5.8.

That is up to you. Some people measure their pH level weekly, while others never do.

Measuring with a pH strip provides a snapshot. Factors such as stress and diet can influence the pH value.

Best way to perform measurements:

  1. From 8:00 PM the night before the test, drink nothing except water.
  2. Begin the test day by measuring your morning urine.
  3. Take a second measurement around 1:00 PM with a new strip.
  4. Finish the test day with a final measurement around 8:00 PM.

Add all measurements together and divide by the total number of measurements for the best result.

Yes. Your acid-base balance can be out of balance even if you do not detect it in your urine. Once waste products have been absorbed into tissues, they are no longer detectable in urine.
